Lib Tech Box Scratcher Review: Banana Board for Park and Street

Lib Tech Box Scratcher Review: Banana Board for Park and Street

The Lib Tech Box Scratcher is a classic youthful freestyle board for people who want a skateboard on snow and everything working in both directions: Original Banana, a true twin (identical nose and tail, so it rides the same in both directions) and Magne-Traction. In philosophy it is very close to the Skate Banana, but with an even more park-minded character, more pop and a design that has always looked toward street (riding urban features such as rails and stairs) and skate culture. With us it is the last piece, a 154 from the 2023/24 season, the model's last.

Snowboard Science ep. 2 - Banana rocker, TrueRidersSnowboard Science ep. 2: Banana rocker - the revolution that changed snowboarding

The Box Scratcher is the end of an era in Lib Tech's freestyle line

In Mervin's photo archive the Box Scratcher appears every season from 2018/19 to 2023/24, under different names and versions: the Box Scratcher Reis in 2018/19, standard and Wide in 2020/21, the Burtner Box Scratcher in 2021/22 and 2022/23. For 2024/25 the model is no longer there. That is why we say the Box Scratcher now has a collector's weight too: it is part of a finished era of Lib Tech freestyle boards.

The 2023/24 artwork is a joint one by Christina "Pika" Burtner and Brandon Reis: a white top sheet drawn on with black marker (a camera, a cat, hands, faces, a whole small world) and a yellow base with a huge bird. This is exactly the graphic you expect on a board that is for the rail and the box in the skate park, not for the display window. The name says the same: the Box Scratcher is the board that scratches across boxes.

Original Banana: rocker between the feet for freedom, camber toward the ends for pop

Original Banana / BTX: rocker between the feet and small camber zones toward the nose and tail.

The profile is Original Banana / BTX, the same idea the Skate Banana introduced in 2007. The rocker between the feet lifts the edges toward the ends: the board does not bite the snow when you make a mistake, it turns almost by itself and spins easily on a box and rail. The small camber zones toward the nose and tail bring back the spring for ollies and control on landing. Mervin describes the profile in three words: easy, feature-ready, floaty.

The nose and tail are flat, with a short kick, like a skateboard. This gives a stable platform for presses and balancing on the nose or tail. Lib Tech calls the shape "boxy": wide, stable ends. Magne-Traction, with its wavy edge, keeps the grip on hard snow and ice, where a rocker board would otherwise slide.

In the park and on the street the Box Scratcher is a skateboard, and the whole mountain becomes a skate park

The Box Scratcher is made for rails, boxes, balancing with a press on the nose or tail, and riding switch: everything you would do in a skate park, only across the whole mountain. The true twin and zero setback make it the same in both directions: landing switch is not a problem, and spinning a 180 on a box does not require you to think about which side is forward. Lib Tech describes it as an everyday freestyle board for all conditions, with lots of pop, floaty and easy to balance with a press.

Outside the park the rocker helps in soft and chopped-up snow, and Magne-Traction on the hard stuff. This is not a freeride board for steep lines and high speed, but for natural bumps along the piste, small jumps and playing with the terrain it is right in its element.

Forgiving on the first day, and you do not outgrow it when the trick gets bigger

Mervin writes that the Box Scratcher is for first attempts and for freestyle legends alike. The rocker forgives, a flex of 5 on the 154 does not punish, and the true twin shape does not require you to have decided which direction is yours. But the OP construction with a sintered base and Magne-Traction are not beginner things: the board stays interesting when the box becomes a rail and the small jump becomes a big one. For a young rider who wants to ride park and street, this is a board that will last for years.

OP is Original Power, Mervin's construction with a wooden core of Aspen and Paulownia, light and strong. The sintered base is faster and more durable than an extruded base (easier to maintain), which matters for a board that regularly gets scratched across boxes and rails.

Size: the 154 is for a rider from about 50 kg up

The 2023/24 Box Scratcher came in sizes 147, 151, 154, 156W and 157, and with us the last one is the 154. Lib Tech rates it from 50 kg up, and the 25.3 cm waist is for a standard boot, up to about size 43. For park and street most riders take a slightly shorter board than usual, since it is easier to spin and to press. Enter your weight and boot size and we will tell you whether the 154 is for you.

The Box Scratcher versus the Skate Banana, Off Ramp and GNU Money

The Lib Tech Skate Banana is the bigger brother: the same Original Banana, true twin and Magne-Traction, but more versatile, for the whole mountain and for deep snow, and it continues every year. The Lib Tech Off Ramp is the next step for park and street: traditional camber instead of Banana, a stiffer flex and more spring, but less forgiveness. The GNU Money is the reasonably priced way into the same world: the C2 family, twin and Magne-Traction.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Box Scratcher suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Original Banana rocker forgives, a flex of 5 does not punish, and the true twin shape works the same in both directions. Mervin makes it for first attempts and for strong freestyle riders alike.

What is the difference between the Box Scratcher and the Skate Banana?

The profile and Magne-Traction are the same. The Box Scratcher is aimed more at park and street, with flat ends with a short kick and a youthful design, while the Skate Banana is the more versatile board for the whole mountain and deep snow.

Is the Box Scratcher good on piste?

Yes, for relaxed riding, bumps along the piste and playing with the terrain. Magne-Traction holds on hard snow. For high speed and long carving turns, a camber board is the better choice.

Is the Box Scratcher still made?

No. The last season is 2023/24: in Lib Tech's 2024/25 materials the model is no longer there. Our 154 is the last piece.

Which size should I get?

With us it is only the 154, for a rider from about 50 kg up and a boot up to about size 43. If you are on the border, write to us with your weight and size.

How to choose and where to try it

If you want a board that turns the mountain into a skate park, forgives at the start and does not get outgrown when the trick gets big, the Box Scratcher 154 is the last chance at this model. If you want the same feel but for the whole mountain, the Skate Banana. If the park is everything and you want more pop, the Off Ramp. Come to the shop at Golo Bardo 6A in Sofia or call us at +359 887 800 575 and we will show you the board in person. We have been riding this stuff since 1997.
