How to choose snowboard boots
Of the three parts of your set-up, boots matter most. A comfortable boot that holds your heel makes an average board good, and an uncomfortable one ruins the whole day.
What size should I take?
A snowboard boot fits tighter than a street shoe. Standing straight, your toes lightly touch the front. When you bend your knees as when riding, they pull back. Your heel should not lift when you lean forward. A new boot slowly moulds to your foot, so do not take a bigger size "just in case". Try them on with the socks you ride in.
Laces, quick lacing or a dial?
- Traditional laces – you tighten each part of the foot as much as you want and they are easy to fix, but they take longer.
- Quick lacing – you pull a handle and tighten the upper and lower part separately.
- BOA – you tighten with a dial; it is the fastest and works with gloves on.
Soft or stiff boots?
A soft boot is comfortable, forgives mistakes and suits beginners and the park. A medium one is for all terrain. A stiff boot holds your foot at speed, on hard snow and in freeride. The stiffness of the boots, the bindings and the board should be close.
Step On
Burton Step On boots have clips at the heel and the sides and click into a Step On binding with no straps. They only fit Step On bindings; with regular bindings they ride like normal boots.
We carry boots from Northwave and Burton. If you do not know your size, come and try them on in the shop.
