The 2025 GNU SOMETHING GNU 156 is a great leap forward for mankind... Gnu was credited by TWS mag as being the first brand to market deep carving sidecuts intended for resort hardpack terrain, which was a critical step as snowboards evolved from finned backcountry powder designs only, to modern all terrain “directional device” resort atvs. Something Gnu takes the inspiration of Mike Olsons early 80s’ finless designs and adds in all we have learned over the past 40 years of Gnu board building. Fine tuned progressive sidecuts provide forgiving turn entry and finlike hold in the tail allowing deep powerful trenched carving on hardpack and ice. A long smooth tip entry floats the pow effortlessly on those special days and the swallow tail and taper settles nicely adding even more control and float. A modern directional C2 contour works in harmony with tip and entry sidecut for easy turn entry and the tight shorter camber adds hold in the tail for radical resort power carving. “Drifty Snowboards aren’t delicious... business casual in the front, power party in the back!

GNU Something is definitely something, and a very interesting one. It is a clearly directional freeride board with a big nod to the early history of GNU and the ideas of Mike Olson.

The directional C2, the long smooth nose with an easy entry, the swallow tail, the tapered shape and 4" of setback say one very clear thing: powder.

The swallow tail lets the back sink more easily, the nose float, and the rider stand more naturally on the board instead of constantly loading the back foot.

But the Something is not just a powder toy. The progressive sidecut radius and Magne-Traction make it very capable on hardpack and when carving, which turns the model into a real historic idea made with modern technology.

Key specs: directional C2; long-entry nose; swallow tail; tapered shape; 4" setback; progressive sidecut radius; Magne-Traction; G Lite 3; Carbon Power Bands; Knife Cut sintered base.

The size is not chosen by length alone. Weight, surface area, waist, profile and effective edge length together tell how a board will work. The table shows the lower weight limit that Mervin gives for each size. A shorter board turns faster and is more playful; a longer one brings more stability and float. The waist should match the boot: at about 24-25 cm the boots are usually up to size 42-43 (EU), at 25-26 cm up to 44-45, and the W versions are for a bigger foot, so that toes and heel do not drag when carving.
