The Stump Ape 161W is a rare example of the double-width philosophy - a short, very wide board with a huge surface area.
It is a relative of the iconic Skunk Ape, but with volume shifted (shorter and wider for the same volume) - short and wide - and it is built for extreme carving and very deep snow at the same time.
The width allows huge heel-side and toe-side angles with minimal risk of boot drag, and the huge surface area turns the board into a real surf tool in light, dry powder.
Technical highlights for the 161W: C2X; 28.3 cm waist; 33.7 cm nose; 31.7 cm tail; 2" setback; flex 7/10; sidecut radius 7.5 m; surface area about 723 sq. in.; HP construction; volume shifted.
Review on the blog: Lib Tech Stump Ape 161W review: a short, wide board for big riders
| Size | Contact length | Waist | Sidecut radius | Stance (min-max / setback) | Flex (1–10) | Rider weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 161W | 119 cm | 28.3 cm | 7.5 m | 49.5-61.6 / 5.1 cm | 7 | from 75 kg |
This is a volume-shifted board - it rides shorter than your usual board, because the width and surface area give the float and stability that otherwise come from length. The table shows the lower weight limit that Mervin gives for each size. The waist is wide - the board also works with big boots without them catching the snow.
Not sure which size? Write to us or stop by our shop at Golo Bardo - we have been riding this gear since 1997.
