The Lib Tech Orca Split is Travis Rice's Orca cut in two, so you can reach places with no lift and ride a real Orca there. We ride it on the days the lifts are closed, and for us it may be the best splitboard in the world.
The shape is the Orca's: a long floating nose, a wide body and a short Whale Tail with short contact. The directional C2X, with rocker between the feet and camber toward the nose and tail, gives float in deep snow and a secure edge when it gets steep, tight and icy. We would call it a small hybrid between the Golden Orca and the classic Orca.
The construction is the lightened SC splitboard build: a wood core almost entirely of Paulownia, a Knife Cut sintered base (faster, holds wax) and thin nose and tail. The climb with skins is easy, and at the top the Karakoram UltraClip 2.0 and Tip-Locks pull the two halves together without play. With Karakoram splitboard bindings the board becomes one piece and you do not feel two separate skis under your feet.
This is a board for someone who wants to ride relaxed off the piste and have a Travis Rice board without mixing it up with their everyday board. Lib Tech recommends a split that is 3 cm shorter than your usual size.
Key specs: Travis Rice; directional; C2X; Whale Tail; 1.5" setback (the stance is shifted toward the tail); SC splitboard construction; 95% Paulownia / 5% Aspen; Knife Cut sintered base; Karakoram UltraClip 2.0 + Tip-Locks; Magne-Traction; flex about 8; deep snow / off-piste / splitboard.
Review on the blog: Lib Tech Orca Split review: the Travis Rice Orca off the piste
| Size | Contact length | Waist width | Sidecut | Stance (min-max / setback) | Flex (1-10) | Rider weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 159 cm | 115 cm | 26.7 cm | 8 m | 43.2-60.9 / 3.8 cm | 8 | from 75 kg |
Choose a splitboard like a regular board for the same terrain: by weight (the table shows the lower limit given by Mervin), with a bit more length or surface for float in deep snow with a pack. The waist width should match your boot; touring boots are usually bulkier.
Not sure which size? Message us or stop by our shop in Sofia. We have been riding this stuff since 1997.
