How to choose a wetsuit
A wetsuit is chosen by the temperature of the water you will ride in. Thickness is written with two numbers: 3/2 means 3 mm on the body and 2 mm on the arms and legs, so you can move freely.
What thickness for what water?
- Above 19 °C – up to 2 mm, often a shorty or just a top. The Black Sea summer.
- 15–19 °C – 3/2 mm. May, June and September–October at the sea. The most common thickness.
- 12–15 °C – 4/3 mm. Autumn and spring.
- Below 12 °C – 5/4 mm, with a hood, boots and gloves. Winter.
If you stay in the water long, ride in wind or simply feel the cold, take the thicker one.
Back zip, chest zip or zipless?
A back zip is the easiest to put on – good to start with. A chest zip lets less water in at the neck and is more flexible. Zipless is the lightest and most flexible, but harder to put on.
How should it fit?
Tight like a second skin, with no folds and no air at the lower back and under the arms – that is where cold water gets in. Neoprene relaxes a little in the water, so between two sizes choose the tighter one if you can raise your arms above your head in it.
Rinse it in fresh water after every session and dry it inside out, in the shade. We carry men's, women's and kids' wetsuits from O'Neill.
